Monday, January 23rd, 2012Champian's Update from the "Feel the Heat" Tour, Notes from the Road

Hello everyone! We are in Germantown TN tonight with our first night off since we left New York last Wednesday. I am having such a wonderful time traveling and meeting all new people, not to mention this lovely warm southern weather.

We kicked off the tour with a show in Washington DC at Twins Jazz Club last Wednesday. It was my first time to play in DC and I think we will definitely be back at Twins. The room has a GREAT sound and is very friendly.

Friday we performed at the Germantown Performing Arts Center (which is a suburb of Memphis TN) to a completely sold-out standing-room-only show. We did an encore! Such wonderful people at the Germantown PAC, not only in the audience but also in the staff that took care of us. It's always such a pleasure to work for people who take good care of you. (If you want to hear the concert from the GPAC, you can tune into WUMR this Sunday evening at 8 PM CST, either by radio or online for FREE.)

Saturday and Sunday evening we performed at Vanelli's in Tupelo, MS (the birthplace of Elvis!). I had no idea what to expect in terms of who would come out and how they would receive our music, but when I walked into Vanelli's on Saturday night before our show it was PACKED! A gentleman walked up to me and said, "Do you take requests?" I said, of course, if I know it; and he proceeded to hand me a list about 10 songs deep of his favorite tunes from my albums. I have fans in Tupelo MS! Crazy! Not only that but several people said they had never heard Jazz before and they really loved our show. I have played for many wonderful audiences in the world, but that audience in Tupelo was so appreciative and warm! They are really nice people in Tupelo.

Also, on Sunday night we had a request for "Summertime". We don't normally play that song, but we decided to play it and invent an arrangement on the spot. Hide and I did a rubato "free" version out front, as an intro, and then started to play it again that way on the way out (when the song was over). It was so quiet in the room, you could hear a pin drop, and just as we were finishing the song - BOOM! And all the lights went off! Scared me half to death! Seems something was hit by lightning, and the power shut off. It was so wild, it startled us all! (If you were there, you remember!)

Today we gave a clinic at the University of Memphis. The students were so smart and asked great questions. I love teaching and I really loved interacting with them and seeing the Jazz community from their perspective.

Now we have a few days off and we are doing the sight-seeing things (today we saw Graceland and visited the Memphis Drum Shop, besides eating some barbeque! Can't get food like that in NYC!). I have posted some pictures and if you click the link it will take you to my FB page where you can see pics and videos from our tour.

Thanks for listening to my update and checking in! I am so happy to be playing my music for people in a different part of the country; It is a wonderful thing to spread the beauty of Jazz. Thank you for listening!

Yours,
Champian
