Yotam Rosenbaum Review on MyOwnFM.com (April 2010)

This is my first CD review for MyOwnFM. I had to choose from over 40 great albums that have quickly piled up on my desk. It is amazing how many great “undiscovered” artists are out there and it’s our mission at MyOwnFM to connect these high quality artists with their target audience.

Choosing which album to review from the pool of greats was an easy task. Champian Fulton is an incredible vocalist and piano player. It took me two seconds to fall in love with her voice. It is so sincere and real. On this album, The Breeze and I, Champian is joined by Neal Miner on bass, and Fukushi Tainaka on drums.

Her ability on the piano is incredible. If it wasn’t for the smiling picture of a young lady on the front of the album, I would have easily mistaken her playing with one of the greats, such as Red Garland. She swings hard and has a great melodic approach to soloing. Her chops are impressive and well balanced with great musicality. The trio as a whole sounds like a group that has been playing together for a very long time. Their playing is tight together, and they constantly play off each other’s ideas.

Champian has successfully done a challenging task. She created an album that honors the tradition of Bebop, yet still sounds contemporary and fresh. This makes it appealing to both younger jazz lovers, and the seasoned crowed.

I’ll keep it short – Champian Fulton’s The Breeze and I is a fun, easy listening, yet sophisticated enough jazz album. Don’t take my word for it. Listen to samples of the album here.

And remember, if you like what you hear, buy it! Support independent artists.
