In her 20+ year career since moving to New York City, Champian Fulton has released 21 award-winning albums as a leader, usually in trio or duo settings. With a desire to do something new, Champian proposed this project to Klas after learning of his Nonet while at the Copenhagen Jazz Festival. Klas has been arranging for his award-winning Swedish Nonet for nearly 20 years; their most recent recording “Alternative Source of Energy” was hailed as the Best Swedish Jazz Album in 2023 by the readers of OrkesterJournalen, one of the oldest Jazz publications in the world.
With Champian as his collaborator, Klas has written a new repertoire of arrangements and compositions to feature the pianist / vocalist, including a beautiful version of “You Were Always on My Mind.” The Nonet is already much in demand: in the past year the Nonet has performed at NYC’s acclaimed Birdland, in Florence Italy, at Stockholm’s famed Jazz club Fasching, and in Santander Spain for International Jazz Day. New York based Turtle Bay Records has recorded the Nonet with award-winning producer Brian Camelio at the helm and the album, titled “Champian Fulton + Eight”, is expected in the summer of 2027.
The ensemble surrounds Champian (at the piano & singing) with 6 horns + rhythm section, featuring Klas Lindquist on lead alto and clarinet.
